Before the riders arrive

As I might not have full access to my PC to post for a few days while we’re having some decorating done, I’ve pre-written a few posts with older pictures that I haven’t posted before (I hope!). As I’m a little stuck for time to write them, they’ll each have this same boilerplate text. If I get back on my PC earlier than usual I’ll probably put the remaining ones back into the drafts folder for emergencies.

Dodgems not bumper cars

I’ve always thought that the name you choose for this particualt fairground attraction defines you as a person to a degree. Are you someone who loves the anarchy and destruction of ramming your car into your fellows? Or are you the type that thrills at the near misses and skillful escapes required to avoid impacts? I’ve always fallen into the latter group, eager to avoid conflict and trouble where possible in my life. This is complete cod-psychology hokum of course (although I wonder if someone has done a study? 😉 ), but it serves a purpose for today.

After yesterday’s unhappy experience of our cat being hit by a car, we’ve had to take him back to the vet today. Although he was drinking a little yesterday, it soon became apparent that he couldn’t eat – although he was cleary hungry and was pestering us for food. So this morning, following the advice from the vet yesterday, we took him back so they could make sure he got some fluids and nutrition. They decided it would be wise to sedate him and give him a more thorough examination than they could yesterday, including an x-ray, so my wife took him this morning and left him there to be looked after.

We received a call this afternoon that is tongue was not only bruised, but also lacerated, so they have had to put some stitches in. His cheeks were swollen and they’ve also removed some loose teeth. He’s been in the wars somewhat and has been very lucky that it wasn’t much more serious than it was. We should be able to pick him up in the morning and get him on the road to recovery. Fingers are crossed that he will be ok.

I’m hoping he’s a dodgem type cat and will evade any further problems.

The past few years that I have visited Mablethorpe in September, the funfair has been closed. Whether this is because the customers who would partake of the larger rides are all back in school by this time, or maybe they only open at the weekends – this year I visited on a Friday whereas it’s been midweek most other times. Or perhaps, in this pandemic year, they are staying open for longer, seeking to eke out whatever income they can following a summer season that will have been heavily affected by the lockdown at its beginning, and then – to some extent at least – smaller numbers of visitors than usual (although it will be interesting to see if the loss of foreign trips has resulted in larget numbers of tourists, perhaps balancing things a little). Whatever the case, it’s hard not to feel sorry for the businesses and workers who rely on the summer season at resorts around the country who will have seen their incomes affected. I hope they are able to survive.

Today’s photos were made in the still-open funfair. There were few other visitors to be seen, although it was still early in the day.

Yesterday I made a comment about providing an explanation for cropping my 6×6 photo to a 6×7 ratio. The reason for this was a series of highly noticeable light leaks across the whole set of images, and I think I know the reason why this occurred…

After shooting the roll of Provia, I wound the fill all the way onto the take-up spool as I normally do. Then, however, rather than removing the film and sealing it ready for processing, I instead left it inside the camera. My reason for this was that it was a bright, sunny day and, as I wasn’t planning on shooting any more medium format during the day, I’d leave it in the camera rather than risk it in the daylight. Oh, the irony.

What I think then happened is, as I enjoyed the rest of my day out, the film in the camera – no longer held under tension – was able to loosen itself slightly on the spool. Then, when I got home and removed it, I immediately noticed that the rolled film was protuding over the flanges on the spool slightly. I quickly wrapped it in some tinfoil but, alas, the damage was already done – as evidenced by the light leaks on the top and bottom of most of the frames.

Thankfully, with a little bit of cropping (turning most of the roll into 6×7 or 6×4.5 ratio images, or reducing the area of the 1×1 frame) I’ve been able to rescue most of the photos, including today’s shot of an old Octopus fairground ride.

I’ve not seen one of these rides in a long time (although, to be fair, I don’t tend to visit travelling funfairs all that often anymore now that my kids are older). My last real memory of this particular ride (literally this same model) was back in the early 80s when myself and a friend went on it. It made me feel a little dizzy and I was glad when it was time to get off. Unfortunately, the operator miscounted the riders when letting people off and new people on, and we ended up getting a free ride. Sometimes free stuff really isn’t worth it!

Activate panorama mode

The Pentax Espio 140M that I bought for the princely sum of £1 at the steam rally the other week seems to work ok. It’s sharp (although maybe not quite as sharp as the Canon Sure Shot’s I own), and is very compact. The lens still seems pretty decent even when zoomed, and it has a range of metering and focussing modes that neither of my Sure Shot’s have.

It also has a panorama mode. At last, I can get those Hasselblad X-Pan type shots I always dreamed of. Well, kinda. Panorama mode here, like many other 35mm compacts with the feature, is actually achieved by way of a mask that blocks part of the frame, so all you’re really getting is a standard 35mm shot but with big black bars obscuring the top and bottom of the image. The same mask is visible in the viewfinder when the setting is activated, which does make composing the shots straightforward.

While it won’t give the resolution that an X-Pan (or a medium format camera with 35mm back) will provide, the results aren’t too bad, even if they could easily be achieved with any other camera by just cropping your image.

So, without further ado, here are four panoramas taken with the camera. Can you guess which two are actually just crops of a full 35mm frame done in Lightroom because I’d badly composed the images in-camera? 🙂

An empty seat

So, the big, scary carousel-thing is back in Sheffield at present (it’s been there for a few weeks, in fact). I took a few photos on a disposable Ilford XP2 camera, but this isn’t one of those – although, by coincidence, it’s also on XP2. It’s slightly tricky to get an appealing composition without bits of building creeping into the edges of the frame, and I ended up focussing on just the top of the ride when the pasengers were at the very top. Even then I’ve cropped this in a little.
