Being eager to shoot more pictures with my 4×5 camera I visited this old school which I had passed by before.
Previously it was looking run down and somewhat bedraggled but, in the interim, it has been renovated and turned into homes (or maybe one big, fancy home). While this re-purposing of the old structure is good, from a photographic standpoint it doesn’t look half as interesting as it did before. Still, having driven up there I decided to make the shot anyway.
Chroma 4Γ5. Fujinon NW 135mm f/5.6 & Fomapan 100. Fomadon R09 1+50 9 mins @ 20Β°
Taken February 2023. (I can’t remember the specific date. I normally look at my Google Timeline to check such things but remember that I forgot to take my phone out with me on this occasion so it didn’t record the trip).
I get a perverse amount of childish glee out of leaving my phone behind when I go somewhere. It’s probably unhealthy.

Conversely, I feel a disquieting sense of diconnection. Like there is something important I need to be aware of, but which I’m missing. This is probably unhealthy too. π

Then between us, our neuroses cancel each other out and we can claim to be ‘steady as she goes’

My last phone was a pay as you go with Vodaphone, they disconnected me as they thought I was “inactive” – I was going to get a more up-to-date phone, and then thought why? If I used the last one so little it was disconnected what do I need another for? So I don’t have a mobile – I do have a Hasselblad π With your recent results I might have to get rid of the car next and buy a 5X4 !!

I think I’d feel lost without my phone nowadays. I use it for a lot of things, including photographically – I have the Ordnance Survey maps app which can be great for finding places to walk (it covers the entire country), plus a number of other photgraphic apps that can be good for checking things like reciprocity, depth of field, previewing scenes at certain focal lengths etc. Also weather apps, ephemeris apps and stuff like that. Plus the internet. π
I don’t use these things alll the time, but they’re nice to have to hand while I’m out.
5×4 is fun, but I’m still on the learning curve with it. I’m very glad that I received a decent supply of sheet film along with the camera when I bought it – especially the Fomapan, which is relatively cheap and my go-to for figuring out what on earth I’m doing! I got a box of Ektar with the camera too, but I’m definitely waiting until I know what I’m doing with a good degree of confidence before I shoot that – it’s pretty pricey!
