It’s in a catherdral, so maybe the former? Most likely just a stairway to the upper gallaries and the clock-tower though.
This picture instantly brings to mind the poem, Antigonish:
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there!
He wasn’t there again today,
Oh how I wish he’d go away!”
When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door…
Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn’t there,
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away…

I see you’ve gone back to uploading images at their full resolution. I’m certainly not going to complain. 😉
I hadn’t heard or read this poem in a million years, but the image does match it well.

Yeah, while the smaller resolution images looked good, I started to notice some artifacts. Minor stuff, but it bothered me, so I’ve reverted back to the old way of doing things.

My dad used to sing this song to me at bedtime – it was always a favorite of mine, and still is! The photo is a great accompaniment!

Thanks -N-.
My main memory ois of its use in Sapphire & Steel, a British sci-fi / supernatural TV show from the late 70s / early 80s starring Joanna Lumley and David McCallum. One episode featured a faceless man on a staircase and the poem was used throughout the story.
