A couple of photos of Park Hill flats

I’ve posted images from Sheffield’s Park Hill complex a number of times before (see Life among the ruins, Work continues, Colourful buildings, Scooter) and the location always tends to provide something worth photographing.

These two are from the test roll I shot through the Samsung Fino 60S – in fact the bulk of the roll features the complex.

The little camera and cheap film have, again, done quite a nice job on my pictures I think.

  1. Excellent architectural shots! ColorPlus’s soft, pastel colors work wonderfully here. I actually like ColorPlus 200 better than Gold 200. The later and current iterations of Gold just became too saturated and unnatural looking to me. It may be a much older emulsion, but I think ColorPlus is much nicer and more appealing.

    1. Thank you P. I’ve never shot Kodak Gold (although I do have six rolls I bought a while back stored in the freezer). Colorplus is a film that works well in nice light I think. I’m not too keen on the results when the lighting is subdued or overcast as it tends (in my hands at least) to get a little drab and muddy looking. Sunny days make it look great though. The grain’s quite noticeable, but not a problem.

  2. When you get around to shooting some of your Gold 200 I’ll be interested in your results and thoughts. I’m assuming you scanned the above photos yourself, with your Plustek 8100? I don’t have the means to scan my own film in any decent way, so it’s worth noting I’m always at the mercy of the consumer labs I’m using. It’s possible, if not highly probable, that whoever is doing the scans just doesn’t know what they’re doing, or they’re too lazy to put the effort in to do things right. I think this is highly likely as I have issues with labs scanning ProImage 100 too. Like Gold, it comes back way, way too saturated and contrasty, and with poor color balance, regardless of how it was exposed.

    I agree. ColorPlus can be a bit drab in really overcast situations, especially with vintage lenses, but it’s still true to the scene, I think. On days like that, I’d just opt for a roll of B&W, boost the native contrast a bit by extending development, and forego shooting any color at all. Most existing/remaining color emulsions like sunshine and really dislike shade. It’s a shame there’s not really any low-light options left. Even Portra 800 really doesn’t seem to like flat, drab lighting.

    1. These are lab scans (on a Noritsu). I find I have problems getting colours to look “right” when I home scan colour film, so I use a lab that produces results I’m happy with. I do sometimes re-scan my older colour negs with the Plustek and Silverfast, and the results are not bad though, certainly a lot better than I used to get when using my V550 and Epson Scan. I still home scan slide film however, as the lab I get my other colour scans from don’t process E6.

      1. Thanks for the additional information. Well, based on what you’ve shared thus far from this roll of ColorPlus, it looks like your lab does a stellar job scanning.

        I’m hoping that eventually I’ll have the means to get a decent scanner so I can quit relying on labs for anything other than C-41 processing, and maybe E-6 if I ever shoot a roll going forward now that it’s become so expensive. I’m just really tired of being massively overcharged by labs for scanning services that are lackluster at best. Regardless of the lab, it seems they keep getting more and more expensive, while the quality keeps getting worse.

        I’ve seriously considered the Plustek series of scanners as a potential option someday. You get great results with yours. But some part of me is still hoping I stumble across an old Nikon Coolscan, complete in box, at a thrift store or garage sale. Maybe one of these days… 🙂
